Based on this groundwork, OSHA assigns Assigned Protection Factors (APFs) to different respirators. Some of the masks are:
1. Filtering Facepiece Respirator (e.g., N95 Mask):
APF of 10 These are also known as "dust masks" or filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs) and are single-use respirators. The N95 is one of the most well-known masks, filtering out at least 95% of airborne contaminants. Its APF of 10 reduces the user's exposure to contaminants to 1/10 of the concentration. This mask is more suitable for non-life-threatening situations, including healthcare and light industrial applications.
2. Half Mask Respirator (Elastomeric Facepiece)
APF of 10 These have a flexible elastomeric facepiece designed to form a seal around the nose and mouth, with replaceable filters or cartridges to purify air, making them reusable respirators. Like facepiece respirators, these have an APF of 10, suitable for similar exposure but with a more durable and reusable option required in industries like construction, painting, and manufacturing.
3. Full-Facepiece Respirator (Air-Purifying):
APF of 50 These respirators are designed to cover the entire face, including the eyes, nose, and mouth, helping to protect respiratory organs and eyes. An APF of 50 gives more protection than half-mask or filtering facepiece respirators, reducing contaminant exposure to 1/50th of the ambient concentration. The reusable cartridges, which can be particulate, chemical, or combined protection, make them more convenient. These masks are more suitable for the industries that demand eye protection, as they possess moderate to high levels of airborne contaminants. The industries that often look out for this mask are chemical handling, pharmaceutical production, and pesticide application.
4. Powered Air-Purifying Respirators (PAPR):
APF of 25-1,000 These use a battery-powered fan to pull air through a filter and supply clean air to the wearer's face or head. In short, called PAPRs, they come in various forms like loose hoods, helmets, and tight-fitting facepieces, with APFs ranging from 25 for loose-fitting facepieces to 1000 for certain forms. This type is more suitable where higher wear time and comfort level are needed, for example, in industries including healthcare settings, laboratories, and industrial environments with a range of contaminants like asbestos, silica, and biological hazards.
5. Supplied-Air Respirators (SAR):
APF of up to 10,000 In the wearer's facepiece, a hose is connected to deliver clean air from an external source like an air compressor, and it can be used for both continuous flow and positive-pressure modes. These SARs come in configurations like full-face masks and hoods. SARs offer the highest level of protection among respirators by providing an APF of up to 10,000, making them very suitable for extremely hazardous environments or confined spaces where contaminants exceed the protective capacity of air-purifying respirators. For example, environments with toxic gases or vapors, in rescues, and emergency response situations.
Each respirator type offers varying degrees of protection. The type of respirator should be chosen based on the level of contaminants, as each respirator provides different levels of protection. Achieving the designated APF requires proper fit testing, user training, and following a respiratory protection program.
